Police Exam Strategies Handling Police Rules and Procedures Questions

How to answer questions based on police rules and procedures.

Police department rules and procedures are intended to insure officers make correct decisions in a variety of situations. These questions start by stating a set of rules and then ask the candidate to apply those rules to specific case situations.

Most rule and procedure interpretation questions are basically reading comprehension type questions. You read the rule or procedure and use logic to apply the rule to the situation. Strategies PAY attention to the order in which the steps are taken. In general, rules and procedures require officers to follow a definite sequence of steps. Make sure your answers reflect this set order.

Example: Rule 5:1

When responding to traffic accidents, the officer shall in the following order: check for injuries, provide first-aid if needed, call for an ambulance if needed, check for medical alert emblems, request additional squads for traffic control if needed, divert traffic, locate witnesses, record information in a memorandum book, conduct an investigation, file a report.

When a rule states a specific order such as this, it should be followed in the exact sequence.

PAY attention to when the rule is in effect. Certain rules apply to certain periods of time and situations. Make sure your answers reflect the correct time and situation.

Example, Rule 7

An officer may wear a short-sleeved uniform shirt from April 1st until November 1st; from Nov.1st to April 1, the officer must wear a long-sleeved uniform shirt.

PAY CLOSE attention to rule exceptions. When answering questions about rules and procedures, pay close attention to when rules include words like except, only, if, etc. These are rule exceptions. Underline these keywords when reading the given information.

Example: Rule 31:

Officers may not leave their assigned areas EXCEPT in emergencies or when ordered to do so by a supervisor.

PAY attention to completeness. Make sure all aspects of the rule are followed, not just part of the rule.

Example: Rule 72:

An officer shall be punctual in attendance. Officers shall check in with a supervisor who will mark him/her present for duty.

Notice there are two parts to this rule. When answering a question about being punctual for work you would also need to consider the part of the rule that includes checking in with a supervisor. Interpreting Rules and Procedures

Sample Questions

Use the following information to answer the question below:

Traffic accidents are classified in the following categories:

1. One-vehicle accident with no injuries.

2. Two or more vehicle accidents with no injuries.

3. One or more vehicle accidents with injuries that are not life threatening.

4. One or more vehicle accidents with injuries that are life threatening.

Officer Allen responds to an accident at N. 20th Street and W. Logan. Upon arrival, Officer Allen is informed by a witness that a Ford traveling south on 20th Street struck a boy on a bicycle at the intersection of 20th and Logan. Officer Allen observes a boy standing by a bike. He appears to have only minor injuries.

Based on the given information what category accident is this?

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

D. 4

The correct answer is the C (3): a one or more vehicle accident with injuries that are not life-threatening. The easiest way to answer this question would be by the process of elimination. Eliminate the bad choices that don't pertain to the given situation.

Police officers are to call for a supervisor in the following situations:

Whenever force is necessary in making an arrest. Whenever a shooting occurs. All assignments where the suspect is armed. All traffic accidents involving life-threatening injuries. All accidents involving department vehicles. Based on the above information, a supervisor should be called to the following assignments, EXCEPT:

A. armed robbery in progress.

B. burglary in progress.

C. traffic accident involving a car and a bicycle where the bicyclist has head injuries.

D. arrest of a burglary suspect who resisted and was pepper-sprayed.

The correct answer is B.

B the only situation where a supervisor would not be called. Using the process of elimination, A can be eliminated because it involves an armed suspect. C can be eliminated because it includes life-threatening injuries. D can be eliminated because it involves the use of force.

Situation

Officer Burton is about to begin her patrol shift when she discovers that her police vehicle has a large dent in the left rear bumper. She knows that the vehicle did not have this dent yesterday, when she last drove it.

Question

According to the above rule, Officer Burton should most properly:

A. request that she be assigned a different vehicle.

B. begin her shift and be alert to any operating problems.

C. find out what other officers used the vehicle since her last shift.

D. inform her supervisor about the dented bumper.

The answer is D.

Solution

The situation states that Officer Burton has discovered a dent in the bumper of her patrol vehicle that did not exist when she last used it. The question asks what she should do about it. To answer the question, evaluate all of the choices.

Choice D states that the officer should inform her supervisor about the damaged bumper. This is in conformance to the rule that states that the officer should report any damaged or missing parts to her supervisor. Choice D is therefore the correct answer. General Police Department Rules and Regulations

If you have a chance to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of the department where you're testing, you'll gain a tremendous edge. Most likely this is not going to happen. Although public record, most departments like to keep this information confidential. But we have the next best thing:

Physical Therapy Post Below- Knee Amputation

Below-knee amputation or lowerknee amputation is a surgical process conducted to remove a limb damaged due to any injury, trauma or disease. The process of amputation can be performed at any age, but is more prevalent among the age group of 65 years and older.

What do we mean by Beow-Knee Amputation?

Below-Knee Amputation or BKA is a surgical process to remove the damaged or diseased limb. The main reason behind BKA (Below-Knee Amputation) is peripheral vascular disease or poor circulation in the lower limb. Due to poor circulation; immune or healing responses to injury limit and foot or leg ulcers may form that do not heal. These damaging ulcers may develop infection spreading to bones. Amputation is conducted to remove these diseased tissues and to prevent further infection.

During BKA, an orthopedic or vascular surgeon removes the diseased limb while saving as much of healthy bone and tissue as possible. The remaining limb is then shaped up, so that it can be used for a prosthetic leg.

How can a Physical Therapist help?

Below-knee Amputation is a very difficult and challenging phase, both emotionally and physically. More energy and strength is required to walk with a prosthesis than normal walking. Your physical therapist can develop an individualized exercising regime which will not only increase your overall strength, range of motion and flexibility, but will also expedite your recovery and reduce time between amputation and first step with a prosthesis.

Post Amputation Rehabilitation:

Physical Therapist will start your routine as soon as your condition stabilizes and doctor clears you. Your initial treatment may include:

Range-of motion and gentle stretching exercises
Instructions to roll on the bed, sit on the bedside and safely moving to the chair
Educating about the proper positioning of limb to prevent contractures
Educating to move about in a wheel chair and to walk and stand with a supportive device.
Preventing Contractures:

Contractures mean the development of tightness of the soft-tissues which further limits the mobility and motion of the joint. After BKA, the most common contracture that follows is, at the knee when it becomes flexed and it is difficult to straighten it. If these contracturers are not dealt with, they make it difficult for you to walk properly or wear prosthesis and as well increase the need of supportive device like a walker. Your physical therapist will help you to:

Maintain normal posture and range of motion at your knee and hip
Position your limb properly and prevent developing contracture
Maintain normal range of motion through stretching and positioning exercises.
Swelling:

Experiencing post-operative swelling is normal. Compression will be maintained by the therapist in order to protect your residual limb and to lessen and control your swelling. The physical therapist will accomplish compression by:

Wrapping the limb with elastic bandages
Making you wear elastic Shrinker sock.
This also helps to shape the limb in order to prepare it to fit it in prosthetic leg. Your physical therapist will monitor the fit of these devices and as well educate you to use them properly.

Managing Pain:

Your physical therapist will also help you to manage pain in several ways involving:

TENS and electrical stimulation may be used where pain is relieved by blocking nerve signals.
Manual therapy; involving joint manipulation and massages may be used to improvise circulation and joint motion.
Stump management is instructed which includes skin care and stump sock use.
Other Management Techniques:

Your Physical therapist will work with prosthetist in order to prescribe best fit prosthesis for you. Initially, you will receive a temporary prosthesis while your residual limb is healing; thereafter, it will be modified according to your need & requirement
Your physical therepist will help you to master using wheel chair and walking with a supportive device like cruthes or walker.
Therapist will educate you about using your prosthetic limb successfully and will also make you learn how to take care of your resideual limb with regular skin and hygiene checks, exercising and correct positioning.
Therapist will also educate you how to put new prosthesis and take it off.
Therapist will also help you to build up tolerance for wearing your prosthetics for longer times while protecting skin intergrity of residual limb.
Prosthetic training takes time and physical therapist make you learn to stand, balnce and walk with a prosthetic limb. You may progress gradually and eventually learn to walk independently, without using any supportive device.
Your therapist will also continue with stretching and strengthening exercises unless you achieve your fullest potential and become able to perform the activities you used to before amputation.

Phoenix Schools Tackle Dropout Rate

Phoenix Schools Tackle Dropout Rate

The schools in the United States are considered to be in crisis due to the soaring student dropout rate. In his first State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush stated that the national dropout rate was 25 percent.

A recent study conducted by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University puts the current national dropout rate at 25 to 30 percent. Additionally, it indicated that males have the highest dropout rate of 20 to 30 percent and are most likely at risk of not graduating from high school with a diploma.

It is said that when a student drops out of school, he/she drops into the criminal justice system. In 2002, the U.S. incarcerated its two millionth person. Of those in prison at the time, 82 percent were high school dropouts.

Dropouts cost our economy billions of dollars each year, and not just from the cost of incarceration. They are an undereducated work force that retards our economic and social development. Businesses cannot depend upon a large portion of graduating students to fill much-needed jobs, which translates to lost government tax revenues. State governments lose money through welfare payments, unemployment and crime prevention programs. Governments, from the president to the local level, have discovered that if they do not pay for programs to decrease the dropout rate now, they will pay much more in the future.

According to the study, the dropout rates vary dramatically by location and racial/ethnic background. The state of Arizona was cited in the study as one of the five states with the lowest graduation rate for 18 year olds. Thus, Phoenix Schools, along with the Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, have made dropout prevention a top priority.

There are three types of dropouts:

Dropouts students who stop coming to school, Drop-In Dropouts students who come to school but do nothing while they are there, and Forced-Out Dropouts students who were counseled out by school counselors and administrators.

Phoenix Schools are addressing all three types of dropouts. Their initiatives are focused on engaging the students, rather than excluding them. They know that programs alone will not change the dropout rate. Only people and relationships can make a difference.

Phoenix schools work with businesses, community organizations and others to identify and develop effective strategies for keeping students in school. They are working to improve student academic success, believing that the high school renewal initiatives are directly linked to a decreased dropout rate. Phoenix schools are focusing on fixing the system, not the student.

Every student in the state of Arizona must now pass three tests in order to graduate high school. The tests measure the students knowledge against required state standards. Phoenix schools are focusing on the students who do not meet the state required standards. They are tackling their needs by:

Overcoming The Primary Obstacle To Speed Reading

Overcoming The Primary Obstacle To Speed Reading

The most often asked question I get when people either see me read or when they submit a question to my website goes like this: Does it really work? Or, Can you really comprehend when you read really fast? The short answer is yes! This article will explore the question behind that question.

Because Ive been using the skills so long, Ive been perplexed about why this question is so often asked. In my mind, if youre not understanding or comprehending the material, youre not reading! You must be doing something else. Perhaps your mind is wandering - a common problem with untrained readers. Or, perhaps, you are struggling saying all the words to yourself (sub-vocalizing) to hear them in your mind before you believe you understand them. This is surely a block to effective speed reading because you can only read as fast as you can hear the words.

Reading is defined as the minds response the printed symbols. With this definition then, you can only read as fast as your mind can understand (decode) the symbols. It is a visual process, not a sub-vocal process. Did you know that some cognitive researchers estimate that our mind can compute between 80,000 to 100,000 words per minute? Thats the speed of your brain when both the right and left hemisphere are engaged! Do you believe your brain is that powerful?

However, the untrained reader does not utilize both right and left hemispheres when reading. This can be verified by using an EEG monitor. Because of the way most people have learned to read, reading has become an offshoot of processing language - a left hemisphere function. Also, because the untrained reader usually reads word by word, by nature the approach is left hemisphere dominant. Traditional forms of reading are literally half-brained!

How many years have you been reading? If youre reading this article, you have probably been reading for at least 10 years, if not much longer. Thats a long time of ingrained habits. Because these habits are so ingrained, you have developed a belief system that tells you thats how to read. Your mind can not comprehend there are other possibilities without conflicting with your ingrained beliefs. You have a difficult time imagining doing it any other way.

Another part of the speed reading vs comprehension belief system has to do with your own self-image of yourself as a learner. If youve been struggling as a learner for many years, that defines your capability in your belief system. On one hand you may desire to become an effective speed reader who can comprehend anything, on the other hand, since you dont have the personal experience of having done it yourself you wont believe its possible, or you wont believe its possible for you.

But beliefs are subjective. They are not facts. Therefore, you can change your self-limiting beliefs to ones that nurture your growth and development.

Beliefs do shape our thinking and actions/behaviors. Many of the beliefs we hold in our mind are self-limiting and will hold us back until we try new ones instead. However, your self-limiting mind will initially cause you resist the new patterns of thinking.
Perhaps one of the most-told stories about the power of beliefs was provided by the great psychologist Abraham Maslow. A patient refused to eat because he believed that he was a corpse. In exasperation, the psychiatrist finally asked him if corpses bled. The patient said that he did not believe so.
The psychiatrist then proceeded to prick him with a pin, after asking the patients permission to do so. At which point, the patient started to bleed. In amazement, he declared, "Wowcorpses do bleed after all!"

This story illustrates the difficulty you might have when you think about changing a particular behavior or belief you may have. On one hand its simple. On the other hand its hard to change those habits of your thinking. What limiting habits of mind/belief do you suffer from? Are you willing to confront them for your own best interest and self-development?

In my live courses, we begin the program with the participants filling out a simple form asking them about their beliefs and experiences as learners and what they believe about accelerated learning. During the training if someone appears to be struggling, I look at the form they filled out. Inevitably, the ones who are struggling have written negative beliefs about heir own abilities or the possibility of reading/learning in an accelerated manner.

The great industrialist Henry Ford said, Whether you think you can, or whether you think you cant, youre right! In other words, your mind will rally to support what you hold to be true.

Towards a positive self-improvement direction, the popular psychologist, Wayne Dyer has said, Youll see it, when you believe it! What do you want to be true about your learning to successfully read faster, comprehend better, and recall more? Your strong belief will make it happen so much easier. Perhaps you have no role models around you. That can be dis-heartening. But the fact is there are many thousands of speed readers who read fast with good comprehension that I have trained. There are probably millions worldwide.

In closing, then, speed reading doesnt work. You work it. The road to comprehension is built as a system, or method. The speed is merely part of the process. Learning the process may get bumpy at times. So, Id like to ask you: What do you believe about your learning abilities? What do you believe about accelerated learning/reading and you abilities? What do you believe is possible for your minds abilities? What could interfere with your learning these skills, and how can you overcome these obstacles? As a user for 32 years, I can say, without these skills my life would be much poorer. I am a believer. I am a user. You can be too!

Overcoming Test Anxiety  Some Tools and Tips.

We all are familiar with some sort of nervousness or anxiety now and then in our day to day life. One needs not be a scientist to understand that this nervousness grows when the incident that is going to take place in near future or the accident that has just happened will directly or indirectly affect our life.

Most students do experience some sort of anxiety, an uneasiness or apprehension during test or examination due to their over-concern, worry or fear. It is found that test anxieties sometimes causes mental blocks and the students leave the answer script blank though they knew the correct answer.

Researchers say that, anxiety creates a kind of "noise" or "mental static" in our brain that eventually blocks the ability to retrieve and use the data stored in our memory and also affects our normal reasoning and comprehension skills.

But how can we overcome test anxiety!

The test preparation needs to be started very early and there is no last minute suggestion or easy way outs to overcome the situation.

If one is conscious of his test anxiety he must take special care about studying strategically. Mind mapping is a good way of dealing with this, where you create a diagram that reflects the summary and important points or facts like dates of the text. The widely used tool in this segment is the tree structure. The basic point is that it creates an image that can be remembered easily if you can just get hold of one thread.

While preparing for the examination, take a step by step procedure and sharpen your abilities by appearing for mock-tests. The mock tests can help you approach the real test with much confidence. Do not forget to take care of time management when you appear for mock test.

One should stay relaxed during examination and it can only be done if he or she is well prepared for it beforehand. Do not forget to have a sound sleep on the night before the examination and do not go to the hall in empty stomach.

Be positive throughout the time; you know better than any body that it is not so heard a nut that you cannot crack. There you are as better as much you think yourself to be.

If anything goes wrong, take a deep breath and start again or skip to the next question, if necessary, come back to it later.

At the end spend some time to review the answer script.

Some test anxiety overcome programs are available to assist students in reducing test anxiety and other types of learning and performance blocks like Test-Edge or Freeze-Framer. These tools help students to dramatically improve their mental and emotional balance and systems. The National Demonstration Study found that these programs were highly successful in reducing test anxiety and improving test scores for students.

We all wish you best of luck for your success in the next examination.

Online Speed Reading Tools Help Increase Speed Of Reading

To increase the speed of reading, there are many tools available on online speed reading websites. Many people want to increase speed of reading due to compelling factors like having to go through large volumes of study material, thick novels, and other books and journals of interest. During school, students are asked to stand up and read aloud in the class. This is done to ensure that the students have a good flow and speed of reading. Still some people are slow and remain so throughout the school life. This creates a problem in college and university when students have to study and comprehend lots of written work in form of books and notes.

Websites Have Speed Reading Tools

Speed reading does not mean only being able to read at great speed, but also the person should understand, comprehend, and memorize important portions while reading. Many techniques have been applied by scholars to achieve this goal; latest is the speed reading software and tools available on various online speed reading sites. The websites have online tools like Meta guiding, audio tests, visual scan enlargement, skimming, regression, and sub-vocalization.

Some popular speed reading techniques include going through the structure of the reading material. When your aim is not to memorize or go into details but just to get a general information and overview of a topic, reading the introduction and conclusion of a topic is good enough. If this generates interest, you may speed-read the whole article for details.

Another technique is to chunk or group a number of words. Our brain processes a group of words or events together. Therefore, if we practice to chunk three to four words at a time or sometimes a small sentence at a time, this increases the speed reading and promotes comprehension of the material.

While Reading, Use Hand Motions

In primary school students are taught to read by pointing the words with a pencil or marker. This technique is effective as the eye is able to focus more easily on the words and does not dart from one portion of the page to another. Skipping common words like "the," "a," "an," "to," and many more increases the speed greatly. All a reader has to do is to practice these skipping these words everyday and then to see if the comprehension is the same and if he is able to understand the text fully.

Scanning and reviewing are two very effective online speed reading techniques. In this, you must scan the whole document first, reading just the title, subtitles, pictures, and visuals. This will give a fairly good idea about the content of the article. After that give the text one more review for keywords. Then keep the text aside. When you go back to the text after a week or so, you will see that you are able to retain quite a lot.

Last but not the least, we look at the improved vocabulary technique. In this, if you know large number of words, you will not get stuck because of unfamiliar words, and comprehension will be better. The online speed reading techniques are very effective and the websites have many tests designed to see the progress for you

Nursing Continuing Education For the 21st Century

Image source: http://slideplayer.com/10717025/37/images/24/Haircoloring+in+the+twentieth+century+has+become+a+multibillion-dollar+industry+of+professional+products%21%21%21%21%21%21%21.jpg

Nursing Continuing Education For the 21st Century

One need only to scan a newspaper or read a weekly magazine to be astounded by the number of stories about new medical breakthroughs, disease processes, emerging threats of disease, or innovations in medical and health care technology. The World Health Organization warns us to prepare for a potential worldwide Bird Flu epidemic, terrorists threaten us with chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, and new protocols for ACLS are released. How is a working nurse to keep up?

Nursing education provides the basic building blocks of medical, scientific, and nursing knowledge, but competence in the nursing profession requires an ongoing process of continuing education. Continuing education for nurses is necessary for the nurse to remain up to date with the latest practice issues and it is necessary for patient's safety as well. Some states have made continuing education for nurses mandatory and require a certain number of course credit hours be attained before license renewal, or require certain mandatory course subjects, while other states leave it to the nursing professional themselves to accept a personal responsibility for their own continued learning. Regardless of whether nursing continuing education, or Nursing CEUS as such programs are commonly referred to, are mandatory in one's state or not, all nurses who describe themselves as professionals need to be willing and ready to implement change in their own practice by realizing that competence in any profession requires periodic updating.

Methods of obtaining nursing continuing education hours and the pro's and con's of each:

1. Professional Journals: Most professional nursing journals offer an article for continuing education credit. Some offer a partial credit hour or one credit hour to readers who fill out a post test after reading the article and mail it in. While some journals offer the credit for free, others charge $10 or more and in addition to the inconvenience of needing to tear out a post test form and mail it in the nurse has no official record of having taken and passed the course. Obtaining continuing education hours through professional journals is costly and inefficient in that the cost of the journal itself must be taken into consideration along with the cost of the course if there is one, and the time and expense of mailing in addition to the lack of official record of completion and lack of central maintenance of all credits accumulated by the nurse. Additionally, nurses who rely on professional journals for their CEU hours are typically only exposed to courses related to their own specialty rather than a broader range of topics that they actually need to be exposed to in today's ever evolving health care climate.

2. Seminars: Professional development programs and seminars that offer accredited continuing education hours for nurses are frequently offered at various locations in every state, in some foreign countries, and even on cruises. Employers frequently pay the registration fees for nurses to attend local seminars of short duration such as one day, but nurses still have to sacrifice their precious day off to attend them or lose time from work to do so. In addition nurses who attend seminars away from home have to pay their own travel expenses, hotel bills, and costs of meals. Needless to say cruises and foreign travel are an appealing avenue, but obtaining one's continuing education by that method is not something every working nurse can afford to do.

3. Online Nursing CEUS: The internet provides nurses access to extremely affordable and high quality accredited continuing education courses covering a plethora of professional nursing topics. Online nursing ceu courses are the gateway to nursing continuing education for the 21st century! Nurses who take advantage of online ceu courses are not restricted by geographical barriers, financial hardships, or the inconvenience of taking time from work or family in order to attend courses. Online nursing continuing education courses are readily available for both mandatory state required subjects, courses in one's own nursing specialty, and courses that all nurses regardless of practice specialty need to be familiarized with so nurses have access to a much broader choice of subject matters than they ever had before when restricted primarily to journals or seminars. In addition to those benefits, substantial as they are, online nursing ceu courses are inexpensive, up to date with changing trends, can be taken from the comfort of one's own home, generally allow nurses who take them to keep an official record of courses completed and credit hours earned online with the course provider, and allow nurses who complete a course to print the course certificate immediately upon completion.

In order to stay professional and to safeguard the wellbeing of the public nurses need to continue their education over the course of their career through a variety of means including taking continuing education courses. The most convenient and most cost effective method of nursing continuing education is by taking online Nursing CE courses. Online nursing continuing education courses are readily available, flexible, offer online tracking, and provide nurses with the broad scope of subjects they need to familiarize themselves with in order to keep up to date in today's ever changing health care climate. One popular and useful place to obtain online nursing ceus at no cost is Medi-Smart.com's Free Online Nursing Ceu Directory at http://medi-smart.com/freeceu.htm. Online nursing continuing education is indeed the face of nursing continuing education for the 21st century!
